Meiji Pharma Spain is doing its bit by collaborating with the Spanish Red Cross on World Blood Donor Day.
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every June, and once again this year, Meiji Pharma Spain wanted to do its bit and collaborate with the Spanish Red Cross. But why is donating blood so crucial?
- Saving Lives: A single donation can save up to three lives. Accidents, surgeries, cancer treatments, and complications during childbirth are just a few situations where donated blood is essential.
- Maintaining Sufficient Reserves: Blood reserves must always be replenished. Blood has a limited shelf life, so regular donations are vital.
- Benefits for the Donor: Donating blood benefits not only the recipients but also the donor, improving cardiovascular health and stimulating the production of new blood cells.
- Solidarity and Community: Donating blood is an altruistic act that strengthens community bonds. Knowing that your action can directly impact someone else’s life fosters a profound sense of empathy and solidarity.
- Blood donation in numbers:
– Every 3 seconds, someone in the world needs blood.
– Only 5% of eligible donors give blood each year
– A patient with leukaemia may require up to 200 bags of blood.
– A complicated childbirth may require up to 10 bags of blood.
– A liver transplant may require between 30 and 200 bags of blood.
– 1 in 2 people living in Spain will need blood at some point in their lives.
